Wine Etiquette 101

Here is a short list of wine etiquette tips that I found on the blog A Cup of Jo. How cute are the illustrations?!? My favorite tip is the last one which says to happily forget all of these rules and just eat, drink and be merry! But if you are hosting a party or in a situation where you need to bring out your inner wine snob, here are some basics.

1. Fill red wine glasses 1/3 full, white wine glasses 1/2 full, and sparkling wine 3/4 full.

2. Twist the bottle at the end of pouring a glass of wine, to prevent drips (and to give it a flourish!).

3. Cheers! When clinking glasses, make eye contact with the other person. Otherwise, according to French superstition, you’ll risk seven years of bad luck. You should also clink glasses individually with each person at the table without crossing anyone’s arms.

4. If someone is toasting you ( your wedding, your birthday, your general awesomeness), don’t take a sip. Just smile and look humble.

5. Always hold your wine glass by the stem. Many people mistakenly think you only need to hold white wine by the stem (so you don’t warm up the wine), but experts say you should hold red wine by the stem, too, so you can see its color and clarity, as well as to avoid smudging the glass with your fingerprints. Otherwise, wine snobs might call you a “bowl grabber”! :)

6. On the table, your wine glass goes to the right of your water glass.

7. While taking a sip, you should politely look into your glass. (And not at another person, if you’re in the middle of a conversation.)

8. The host’s duty is to make sure glasses stay filled. “My eyes go to empty glasses immediately,” wine expert John Thoreen says. “It’s a real radar thing for me.”

9. Or happily forget all the tips above, and just eat, drink and be merry!

It’s EVERYWHERE

Over the past few months, I have noticed that camouflage is all over the streets of NYC. It first really got my attention a couple of months ago when I saw this girl wearing a worn in camo blazer over a super girly sundress. The contrast of the two was perfection, and she looked soooo much cooler than I did in my typical black blazer. I will definitely add something camo to my wardrobe if I find the right piece. What do you think? Do you like this look or think it should stay in the woods?

What French Women Know

I just finished reading the book “What French Women Know” written by a Debra Ollivier, a woman who was born in America, married a French man, had her children in France, and lived there for ten years. She explores some of the major differences in the typically American lifestyle and the Parisian lifestyle. She explains that the overall American culture is more concerned with “fixing” ourselves and doing/being “right”, whereas the French celebrate their differences, waste no time “fixing” or fussing over the “right” way to do something and instead, spend time cultivating themselves…therefore filling their lives with much more pleasure. I am not going to totally get behind this book because there was about 50% of the content that I agreed with, and the other 50% that I completely disagreed with. However, I certainly agree with the fact that it is pushed upon American women- in magazines, tv, movies, basically everywhere- that we need to be like everyone else, to be agreeable, to be liked. And I do believe that we would all live more pleasurable, enjoyable, relaxed lives and have more authentic relationships if we would stop trying so hard and just be ourselves. Here are a few lines from the book so you will know what to expect if you do choose to read it…

Oh, and while I’m on a French kick, check out Madeleine Peyroux – I’ve been listening to her in the mornings while I have my coffee time – SO GOOD.

From the book…

“There is no conversation more boring than the one where everyone agrees.” – Montaigne

“One thing you have to give up is attaching importance to what people see in you.” – Jeanne Moreau

“Make peace with the fact that some of the best people in your life are fallible, unreasonable, and downright annoying.” – Veronique Vienne

“Strangeness is a necessary ingredient in beauty.” – Baudelaire

“It’s precisely this American inclination to seek harmony at all costs, even to the point of leveling idiosyncrasies and imperfections. This concept does not exist in France because there is no desire to be liked by everyone in our culture. On the contrary, if you are liked by everyone it suggests that you are somehow bland. There is nothing authentic or original about you, never mind sexy.”

“Let’s leave the obviously pretty women to men with no imagination.” – Proust

“I think when you are an adult, you start to like the very things that make you different. If you obsess about some defect, you make it obvious to everyone, and suddenly everyone is staring at just that defect. It’s always like that. The more you hide something, the more it shows. But when you accept your defect, suddenly no one on earth sees it anymore. In fact, it becomes an asset.” -Audrey Tautou

“Most French women aren’t overly concerned with pining away to stay young because many of them are too busy enjoying being grown-ups.”

“There are simple, sensual pleasures to be had in daily life if we’d only let our proverbial hair down (and stop worrying about how it looks when we do).

“The holy trinity of essentials- a simple bottle of wine, bread, and good company- is all that’s needed for a deeply satisfying moment.”

“Taking the time to step off the treadmill is as important, if not more so, as being on it. Thus, the French woman will also organize her life around the imperatives of not doing things – a concept so antithetical to the American way that I get exhausted just thinking about it.”

“French women aren’t quick to query a first date with the bullish: So what do you do for a living? This implies that what you do (i.e., what you make) is more important than who you are.”

“When a woman puts too much energy into the frenetic machinations of having a showroom life, she is, on some level, denying herself both the good life and an authentic life.”

“It’s not the years in your life that count but the life in your years.” -Abraham Lincoln

Weekend Roundup

It’s been forever since I’ve done one of these roundups so I thought I’d give a quick personal update. Things have been super busy and crazy with our work. Some extremely exciting stuff has happened in the past week, and I CAN’T WAIT to share our latest photo shoots!!!

In the middle of all the crazy work stuff, we had a few days away at Cape May, NJ with some of our best friends. It was sooo relaxing- and completely unlike the New Jersey I see on TV. Anyway, nothing makes me happier than doing absolutely nothing with the people I love most.  And that is what we did…no agenda, no plans, just completely chilled out and enjoyed each other’s company. Miller and I are feeling more grateful than ever to have a group of such supportive and encouraging friends, who wish nothing but the very best for each other. It truly is something special. Here are a few photos from the week that will always make me happy.

Most of our nights were spent doing nothing but sitting in this lifeguard stand – perfect.

Our cute little house

Biking everywhere the whole week was so refreshing. And of course these three bikes belonged to us…

Gold + Tangerine

Two of my favorite summer makeup colors. They look AMAZING paired together, on their own, on glowing/tan skin, and are pretty much universally flattering.

This bright lip color is SO fresh and pretty!

Smashbox Legendary Lipstick in Mandarin, Tom Ford True Coral, Revlon Orange Flip

Loving a similar color on nails. Check out how great the gold and orange-ish color look together…

Essie Orange It’s Obvious, Tom Ford Ginger Fire, Chanel Holiday

This glittery golden polish looks pretty awesome, too. Very similar to my manicure post last week…

A bronzy golden eye makeup is a gorgeous, more summery take on a smoky eye. It would look incredible with a barely there sheer gloss. A lighter version of this look would work beautifully with an orangey-red lipstick.

Laura Mercier Black Gold, Yves Saint Laurent Luminescent Gold, Nars Iridescent Copper

God Bless America!

I hope everyone has a happy 4th of July!!! Enjoy celebrating America!
